Cenotes or underground caverns and pools are the natural wonders found in Yucatan Mexico.  More than 6000 cenotes are estimated to exist although only 2400 are registered.

Dzonot is what the Mayans call them but it was translated as cenote by the conquering Spaniards. The Mayans considered these as their sacred places, as for them cenotes represent the entrance to the underworld.  Aside from being a source for freshwater, cenotes are magical, enigmatic and unique in the world.

You can see pictures of stalactites and stalagmites that form inside the cenotes are true natural works of art.

Cenotes come in 4 different types:

– completely underground

– semi-underground

– land level like lake or pond (one found at Dzibilchaltun)

– open wells (one found in Chichen Itza)

These wells are ideal for swimming and cave diving however this is allowed only with a professional guide.
