Day 1 - Tuesday

We can pick you up from Flores, Guatemala -town or airport- any time you like. (You can fly to Flores from anywhere in the world with a connecting flight through Guatemala City - we can help you find your best flight deals!)
From Flores, private transportation will take you to the Tikal National Park where we stay at the Jaguar Inn hotel for the night. This hotel is just a minute's walk away from the entrance of the Tikal archeological site. Spending the night so close to the Tikal National Park allows us to see the park at sunset and sunrise; an unforgettable experience of beautiful colors and abundant wild life.

Day 2 - Wednesday

The day begins with a fascinating guided tour of the Tikal ruins and National Park. We climb Tikal's highest pyramids to enjoy spectacular views over the vast Mayan jungle. Atop these temples and within the park, we’re given the opportunity to see an abundance of exotic wildlife such as toucans, coatis and monkeys. In the afternoon private transportation will bring you to Yaxha, Guatemala; the starting point of our bicycle or horseback* adventure for the next day. Yaxha has a comfortable campsite by the banks of its lake, where we will be camping and enjoying delicious local meals. At night we invite you to enjoy a guided night walk to explore nocturnal flora and fauna.

Day 3 - Thursday

Today we will follow a jungle road that leads us 17 km (11 miles) deeper into the jungle en route to another archaeological site, Nakum, Guatemala. For those that have off-road cycling experience this is a very enjoyable and challenging ride*. Another option is to ride a horse (no experience needed) to reach this amazing destination. After arriving to Nakum's beautiful campsite we explore the remote Mayan ruins hidden deep inside its protected jungle. Few people ever reach this ancient Mayan site where, to this day, excavations still continue.

Day 4 - Friday

We leave Nakum and ride our bicycles or ride horsesback* to Yaxha and take a refreshing break at the lake before visiting the tall temples of its Mayan site. Climbing Yaxha’s highest temple at the end of the day will reward us with a breath-taking sunset view over the lakes and jungle of Yaxha National Park.

We climb down and spend the night at the comfortable eco-lodge, "El Sombrero".

Day 5 - Saturday

We end the journey with a debriefing about your experience. Your guide then accompanies you to Flores airport for your return flight home.

Adventure travel, a shift in backpacking

In 1996 me and two friends undertook our first backpacking experience. We traveled from Costa Rica to Guatemala in six months. We originally planned to travel for a year, but half way decided to do something more useful with our presence in Central America and applied for volunteer jobs in Honduras and Guatemala.
