Scholarship and Financial Aid Opportunities Print E-mail

Here are some financial aid resources in the areas of environment and ecology, Study abroad and Sports. These resources are not for any particular school, but for the general population of students and academics. Although a small list we do hope to increase this resource, so we graciously welcome any feedback or suggestions pertaining to financial aid.

E N V I R O N M E N T A N D E C O L O G Y

Budweiser Conservation Scholarship Program

is open to college sophomores and juniors studying environmental science, natural resource management, biology, public policy, geography, political science, or a related discipline. Awards of up to $10,000 are applied to students’ expenses for tuition, fees, books, room and board, and other direct expenses related to their studies. Awards are meritbased, with consideration given to academic achievements as well as ability and commitment to develop innovative solutions to pressing issues affecting fish, wildlife, and plant conservation. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Greater Research Opportunities Undergraduate Student Fellowships

are offered to outstanding sophomores in environmentally related fields of study. Eligible students will receive support for their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer between their junior and senior years. The fellowship provides up to $17,000 per year of academic support and up to $7,500 of internship support for the three-month summer period. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with at least a 3.0 GPA.

International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management (IIIRM) Internship Program

runs for two to three months during the summer or longer. The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. Indigenous students, other minorities, and women are encouraged to apply. The nonprofit IIIRM assists Indian tribes and other indigenous peoples in the sustainable utilization, management, development, and conservation of their natural resources and protection of their environment, and related human resource development issues. Stipend and benefits vary depending on the assigned project. Deadline is rolling.

Lindbergh Foundation Grants

provide up to $10,580 in seed money to projects in a wide spectrum of disciplines that address the balance between technology and the natural/human environment. Deadline is in early June.

National Wildlife Federation Campus Ecology Fellowship

is awarded to undergraduatestudents who propose tangible projects to green their campuses andcommunities. Fellows receive up to $1,200 in seed money and are expected tofind other funding to cover total costs of their projects. Fellows are required to attend a national training and leadership development event (all expenses covered) in St. Louis, Missouri. See website for deadline.

Morris K. Udall Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship

is open to sophomoresand juniors who study the environment and related fields. Scholars receive upto $5,000 in support. Scholarships are available to Native American and Alaska Native students in fields related to health care or tribal public policy. The scholar’s plan of study is expected to include course work in ethics and public policy or community service. Interested applicants should contact Mark Lytle (x7238). Endorsement by Bard College is required. Bard deadline is February 19, 2008.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Public Service Leaders Scholarship

provides full tuition for two to three years of college. Recipients are required to work with the USDA after college for one year for every year of educational assistance awarded. See website for deadlines.

Women’s Sports Foundation

provides women an opportunity to gain experience in sports-related careers and to interact in the sports community. Internships are arranged by the Women’s Sports Foundation in East Meadow, New York. Scholarships, grants, and internships are awarded. See website for details and deadlines.

STUDY ABROAD

Rotary Club Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships

are awarded for either three of six months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country and provide funds to cover round-trip transportation, language training,and homestay living expenses of up to $10,000 for three-month scholarshipsand up to $17,000 for six-month scholarships. Applications are considered forcandidates interested in studying Arabic, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish. Check availability and deadlines and apply through a local Rotary Club.

Outdoor Writers Association of America Bodie McDowell Scholarship

is open tojuniors, seniors, and graduate students. The $1,000 to $4,000 award is given annually to three or more students who are working toward careers in outdoor writing, radio and television, wildlife or outdoor photography, art, and lecturing or video/filmmaking. Deadline is March 1, 2008.
